  • Stop Criminalizing Mental Illness

The criminalization of mental illness has to be addressed continually and assertively. A 20-year-old study by NAMI revealed that 1 in 5 incarcerated people suffered from a severe mental illness. Today, that number has doubled. Most are held for non-violent, minor symptoms related to untreated symptoms of their illness. April is 2nd chance month: it's time to end the stigmas and discrimination. Let's focus on programs that work, and creating spaces for people who are recovering in our communities and workplaces. #stopthestigma #mentalillness #clubhouseworks https://www.nami.org/Advocacy/Policy-Priorities/Stopping-Harmful-Practices/Criminalization-of-People-with-Mental-Illness

Black Americans exposed to racism are more likely to develop clinical depression, but are less likely to get help - and have less-successful outcomes than white Americans. It's imperative that we view mental illness through a lens of intersectionality. https://www.everydayhealth. com/black-health/health-changemaker-barbara-shabazz-destigmatizing-mental-illness/ #blackhistorymonth #mentalillness #mentalhealth #blacklivesmatter #mentalhealthmatters Shabazz is the founder and owner of Intentional Activities and the author of Intentional Balance.Photo Courtesy of Yardan Shabazz; Everyday Health
